Straight Outta The Gem City: Zay Frost

Zay Frost, R&B singer out of Dayton, OH, made his debut on BumpThatRadio for an interview where he came to give some artistic game, introduced himself, and overall just have a conversation and feel out the vibes. Being able to sit down with him, we were able to get a feel for who he is outside of just his music. 

He planted his feet within the R&B soil in 2022, and has been on the move ever since. He’s been singing since he was a child, and his passion and charisma for music shows this is not a hobby for him. He is also a football player at Defiance College where he majors in Sports Medicine and minors in Music. He plays the drums, and has a little piano knowledge. He describes himself to be a sophisticated young man that has a smooth and bad boy side to him. He says, “Think of a Chris Brown, Micahel Jackcon, T-Pain mix. That’s what you’ll get out of that.” And indeed, he proved his point. 

As an indie artist, he understands the importance of being authentic in a world of people who all sound the same. There has to be some originality somewhere, and he strives to make music that is poetic and lets it speak for him. He tells us, “I’m not one with words, I like to show people better than I can tell them.” His music portrays messages in which men don’t get to speak about these days because of what society may think about it. Men aren’t supposed to have feelings or be in love, but Zay says ‘bump that’ and intertwines reality to become one with his art because you never know who is going through the same thing as you. But the most important thing is that he’s not trying to sound or be like anybody but himself. 

When asked what it’s like for him when he’s able to be in the booth he says, “I like to envision myself singing on stage and other people singing my song while I’m singing it. It hypes me up while I’m in the booth.” He finishes by saying, “Whatever you’re writing, you have to feel that while you’re in the booth.”

Having two albums already and a host of singles on YouTube, he is making a staple as an R&B artist in 2024. With two years in the game, he has definitely hit the ground running. He is also releasing a new single, “Until The End of Time”, which is a FrostMix of the original song sung by Justin Timberblake and Beyonce’, on Nov.1st.
